Peter and Benjamin

I was walking through the grounds of the college on my way home today. In front of me on the path were five youngish chaps who looked vaguely Middle Eastern. They were smartly dressed in shirts and ties, unlike our typical students. They suddenly all stopped, whipped out their mobile phones and gazed intently at these.

I overtook the young men and heard them conversing busily in their own language. I have to admit that I did wonder what they were discussing, so a little further down the path, I turned my head to see what they were doing.

Big smiles on their faces, they were tiptoeing over the lawn, phone cameras held aloft, taking pictures of some of the many rabbits that spend their lives munching away at the grass in the college grounds.

  2. Reminds me of an incident at Macy's in New York City during my vacation there. I ended up on the elevator with a group of African Americans all decked out in hip-hop apparel, tatoos, gold jewelry. I thought "Oh my God, here I am with a bunch of gang members" when all at once they started talking about what they were going to do that Sunday at church for their youth group and a missionary trip they were going on.

I mentally kicked myself having the kind of prejudicial thinking I absolutely abhor in others. Certainly learned my lesson.

  3. Wow -- that's so cool Isabelle. At least you were in tune enough to turn around -- I'm usually in a hurry to get where I'm going and just press on!

  6. Ha! I thought this was going to be a learned post about Peter Grimes and Benjamin Britain......

Much more cheerful to find two young men taking photos of baby rabbits!

  8. So funny....you tend to think of young men being too cool for school so nice to see evidence to the contrary!

  9. That reminds me of the time my cousin and his wife came to visit from England. The conversation turned to our local flora and fauna, and my husband and I were telling them about the family of raccoons that lives in the huge tree in our side yard. My cousin and his wife were giving each other the side-eye, and we asked what was up. Wifey answered, "Raccoons are REAL? I thought they were just a make-believe animal, you know, like unicorns."

We had a good laugh over that, and the fact that the two of them, in their late forties/early fifties, had never once in their whole lives tasted ICED tea.

    I love cultural experiences!

  10. As I sit here shivering in our study, the sky iron grey, puddles lying everywhere, I ask myself: why would anyone want iced tea? Brrr!
