My guilty secret is that I watch "The Weakest Link" while making the evening meal. After a gruelling day, it's nice to feel relatively clever.
Tonight's gem:
Question: What's the English name for the town that's called Turino in Italian?
Answer: Toronto?
I sometimes watch it too, for much the same reasons. I am constantly amazed at how little people know of what used to be common knowledge, and how little they use reason to figure out an answer. But I can't stand the appalling rudeness of the compere, nor the way the contestants put up with it. I also watch The Eggheads. I am depressed that the contestants know little except TV, pop music or sport. (I know nothing of these.)
ReplyDeleteOhhh! Now I feel clever too!
ReplyDeleteYup yup yup - I also like to feel a little bit bright by knowing such esoteric facts as "what A is attached to your shoulder" (I kid you not!).
ReplyDeleteI try to be charitable and say that the pressure of the lights and Anne R is sending the answers flying out of their tiny pea brains but, honestly, some of them are terrible...
Lesley x
Perhaps the aim of the contestant selection panel is to make the rest of us feel good - in which case it works, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteAnn Robinson makes my teeth ache so I am afraid I watch The Simpsons instead. Is that even dumber than The Weakest Link?
ReplyDeleteI watch it also, I like to see how smart or dumb I am.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I don't think we have The Weakest Link here -- I do wish we did though. It would definitely be a pick-me-up after a boring day. I think I might side with Lesley though -- perhaps it's the pressure that gets to them. I once made it past a few low level spelling bees, only to misspell a very easy word because when I looked out at that auditorium full of people, all I could hear was ringing in my ears!
