Fluff and slugs

I don't look at my statistics every day or even every week but I do keep a vague eye on them from time to time, and there have been two occasions recently when there's been a steep spike in the numbers reading my blog. Both times, I tracked back, curious to see which sparkling gems of literary usage had attracted unusual attention.

And both times I was initially baffled as to what in my inconsequential babblings could have caused people to find me. And eventually I decided that it must have been the following:

1) I wrote about Cassie Cat sitting on a nettle. I referred to her... blunt end... using the word which I will represent here as b-t-m, ie rhyming with "got 'em". (Can there really be people with nothing better to do than to Google this word? Urgh.)

2) I wrote about throwing slugs over a wall and referred to this as (first word) u-b-n (second word) t-r-o-i-m, ie (first word) a word for "city" followed by (second word) a near-rhyme with "heroism". (Argh.)

How disappointed these people must have been to find my silly blog. But it's a bit... unnerving ... don't you think?

  1. oh, that is very funny.

What disturbs me most is finding "where does a babby come from"
and they end up looking at my cat.

  2. The only thing more alarming than that is that I have absolutely no idea what the second thing on your list is supposed to be. How is ubntroim the word for "city"????? I must be losing brain cells at a faster rate than I thought.

    Please to 'splain.

  3. Gosh, Isabelle, I'd never of thought of making those connections. As you say, it's rather unnerving to think of people out there searching for such things - makes me feel rather naive.

  4. C,mon Marcheline - urban terrorism.

My blog is regularly found when people look up how to set a table properly and find my post 'This fork is for what?' I think it's a hoot, myself, but I'm glad for them that I jokingly copied and pasted from an etiquette publication a long piece of text with diagram of a rather ornate table setting.

I'm looking suspiciously at my cats now and thinking about babbies......

  5. just one of the reasons why I am happily un-googlable these days!

  6. I almost feel sorry for the odd person who googles 'dominatrix in training' and ends up reading my post about Rachel's leather nightie, which isn't actually made of leather at all. It probably isn't what they were looking for. At all.

One of the biggest mysteries that I've found in the statistics game, is that whenever someone ends up on one of my posts by googling "I'm too sexy for my shoes", the searcher is inevitably from India.

  7. I haven't found out how to do this yet - check how people get to the blog. After what you've said, I'm not sure I want to know now ...

  8. I couldn't figure out the second thing either! You're not alone Marcheline. I never even thought about people googling about that stuff. I live in another world I guess. Just me and my sweet doggie.

  9. Fluff and Slugs. Two 1930s Chicago gangsters that never quite made it....

I haven't been in my stats reader for a while and now you have piqued my curiosity again. Thanks, Isabelle - I was short of things to keep me faffing about on the internet instead of doing the hoovering....

  10. most of my hits are people looking for penguin burials - sheesh ...... my favorite was "what does it mean when a frog has a pink bubble coming out of its butt?" which, when googled, has 21,700 links ... and all because i wrote about frog eye salad

  11. I had to go back and edit a post because of the truly horrible search that was attracting sickoes to my cheery family blog.

The post itself was about my then 3yo parroting a swear word so it was a harmless enough post but it featured the words M0ther and s0n and a swearword that rhymes with duck, and that little combination brought in the sickoes. Made me feel cold in the pit of my stomach when I found out.

  12. I'm with Fran on this one. I wouldn't know how to look for those kind of statistics, and I've got better things to do on the internet anyway! There are so many nice things to read, such as blogs and stitching sites...

  13. It is rather unsettling to realise there are such vacant minds out there, with nothing better to amuse them.
I have a post which keeps getting hit, and I am considering either taking it down, or changing the title.
