At choir tonight, we sight-read the next movement of Haydn's St Cecilia's Mass. It wasn't wonderful."Don't breathe between In excelsis and Deo," urged our conductor. "I know it's a long phrase, but the Deo is quite short. You won't die if you don't take a breath till afterwards."
Then, as he so often does, he continued in a murmur (and with a smile). I could just hear him: "Frankly, I'd rather you did die. It's all about the music."
I love him. I mean, I don't love him. But I love him as a conductor.
Sounds like our conductor too......don't breathe, she says......if we don't breathe occasionally we will die......

ReplyDeleteHa! My mom gives me a St. Cecilia-related gift every birthday. I was born on Beethoven's birthday, and I play classical piano. St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music (as you probably know) so it's become a "thing" for us.
