A new one on me

Our students have been sitting exams. In paper 2, they have one and a half hours to write two essays: thus we point out that they should spend about 45 minutes per essay. There are various questions to choose from.

My colleague noticed one student just sitting there doing nothing while her fellow-classmates scribbled furiously. Worried that the girl might be ill, she approached and asked her if she was all right.

“Yes,” said the girl. “But I can only answer one of the questions, so I’m waiting for the first 45 minutes to be up and then I’ll write the essay.”

(Hello, Meghs - how kind of you to unlurk and what a nice comment! Do pat your cats for me.)

Hmmm. Can you direct her to a time management class by any chance? I love it when you post your howlers -- they're always good!

I hope that she aces the one that she knows, because I don't like her chances otherwise...

Her time management needs work but her integrity is top-notch.

Yes, like Caroline I was rather impressed by her fair-mindedness. If not her common sense.

Reminds me a bit of the Youth Opportunities ( remember those?) lad my brother had working for him, they gave him a plank and asked him to cut a small square of wood from it, then found hime trying to saw into the middle of it in order to cut the square from there...
Thanks for your comment at mine, I'm very glad you say your hs in wh words,as I said, Scottish English leaves in quite a lot of good sounds that lazy southerners leave out, and is probably in many ways superior (still trying to make up for calling you English that time...!)

I suppose the question she thought she didn't know was listed first....lol....imagine her frustration if she didn't get quite finished on the second one!

If it's true, what help or advice did she get later or did the supervisor advise her it would be okay to start the second essay now?

How on earth could your colleague keep a straight face!

It is a mystery, how some people's minds work!

It made me wonder- is she a glass half full girl, or a glass half empty? How would she know?

Nothing surprises me any more. I was invigilating last term, and the same sort of thing happened there. Give the suggestion that they time themselves and they think they are not allowed to alter it.
I am off to work now. Beam me up, Scottie.

Hmmm! What to say? I never had to invigilate exams as I was in Primary Education but I have many similar type stories maybe I'll start posting a few.

This story sounds as though it should be apocryphal, but I fear that it isn't.

Hopefully she was just a bit rattled by the experience of taking a test, and someday will look back on this and shake her head ruefully.
