I always associate the scent of hyacinths with being young. Teachers tended to have them in classrooms when we were in primary school. I've grown them in pots in the winter throughout my adult life, so why they should evoke my childhood so strongly, I don't know. Anyway, I love the perfume.This grandbaby, whom I scarcely dare believe in, makes me think of flowers and fresh hope and nice scents (yes, I do remember nappies, but think of that clean baby smell - yum).

There's a scene in Patrick Susskind's "Perfume" where a peasant woman is trying to describe how a proper baby should smell, and she says their heads smell of warm caramel. They do, too (most of the time!)

ReplyDeleteWe always had geraniums in the small conservatory where I was taught to read so the smell of those takes me straight back to flash cards and A,E,I,O,U (and Mrs Gerome of brillo pad hair, flowery smock and uncertain temper, who mad sure you learnt very quick to get into the next group with nice Miss Downey!).
I love the new baby smell so much. Babies are terrific, I am really happy for you all!
ReplyDeleteGeraniums are my Madeleines. I used to play in a little sandbox on the balcony of my great-aunt's house overlooking London's largest garden square. The smell of geraniums still conjures up that sandbox and the feel of my childhood for me, more than 40 years later.

How strange to look at your post just now....I gave my sister a hyacinth that I had 'assembled' for her as a Christmas 'stocking filler'weeks ago ....I bought a bulb, a beautiful glass in a charity shop and some beautiful ribbon...put it all together and watched it grow. Took me back to schoolrooms too....
