Walking into town

Yesterday we went to the exhibition of American Impressionists at the Modern Art Gallery. I'm ashamed to say that we had never heard of quite a few of them, including the splendidly-named Childe Hassan and John Henry Twatchtman. They seemed jolly good to us, just as good as the French ones (though we wouldn't claim to be experts).

Then we walked into town through the top part of Dean Village, enjoying the autumnal air.

Here you can see the backs of some of the New Town houses. They must have a good view.

That red makes a statement.

It's always intriguing to look through narrow spaces at a sudden view.

These red roofs are almost worthy of Switzerland.

Up to the New Town itself: Georgian terraces.

This is the Dean Bridge, over which people occasionally jump, alas. It's a long way down.

  1. Walking round your town would certainly keep you fit! What an interesting exhibition.......must admit I haven't heard of those painters either, so I shall look them up.

  4. Beautiful parts of your city I would never have seen! And no, I haven't heard of the artists either. We are educating ourselves, here in the blogging world. Well. I talk about sheds, not artists. I need to get out more.

  5. You're so lucky to have such a beautiful town where you can walk around and see so many interesting things. Now that I've seen a lot of the touristy things in your hometown, I think that my dream should be to come and just spend time walking around. No taking buses 'cause I'm in a hurry to get to where I want to be. (And I'm sure I'll forget this goal, so I'm relying on you to remind me LOL!) (Oh, and one of my favorite things was to walk on High Street and peek through the closes (is that plural of close -- closii???)and see what stunning view would appear!

  8. Oh but you live in a beautiful spot. I discovered Vuillard in the National the other weekend. It's nice to see new things.

  9. Have you thought about conducting walking tours? Now that you're retired and a lady of leisure.... except of course when you're quilting.
