Lockdown week 3 - Tuesday

We passed this private road on our walk today. Up there are some very very expensive houses in large gardens - extremely covetable, though I think I might be slightly nervous at night, living on that quiet road with no passers by. Mind you, we live in a street with only five houses and no through traffic. But I think if I were a burglar, I'd assume that this road would provide richer pickings than ours.

You can see the backs of the houses from the golf course, and I've chosen this Arts and Crafts one for when I'm a multi-millionaire. And when it's for sale.

The snag, I suppose, would be golf balls in your garden.

Anyway, we didn't go on the golf course today, but wandered down to say hello to Mr Life's cousin, who's single and rather bored. She normally goes to the gym and is a member of various interest groups, all of which are of course cancelled meantime, so we had an outdoor chat with her.

In the 30+ years we've lived in this area, we've never set foot before today in this little park. We've only driven past it - it's not all that near our house. This half is on one side of the road...

and this half is on the other. It was quite interesting to stroll through them.

These flats were built in the 1930s and are very typical of Art Deco design. They always remind me slightly of a liner. You can imagine Poirot living in one.

And then back we went through the grounds of the school, with that lovely house, the view of which is somewhat spoiled by the 1960s buildings. When the school moved from the city centre, I was nearly 17. The following year was our sixth year (ie final one at school) and we were given a common room up on the top floor of the old house. It was such fun! We went up there in free periods, read magazines and talked about our (fairly imaginary) love lives.

Then this afternoon I started thinking about the next quilt top, which is also to be made out of my friend's late husband's shirts, but for their son. Unusually for me, I thought I'd quilt one and cut out the other at different points during the day. I never do anything so organised as to follow a pattern which has been helpfully worked out by someone else. No, I see a picture of someone else's quilt, think - oh, that's nice, I could do that - and then sit down to work it out, only then realising that there are complications that I hadn't thought of .

Then Mr L comes and patiently works out how actually to do it. Let's hope he hasn't lost the knack.

I am SO missing the grandchildren. I wonder how Boris actually is?

  1. We aren't golfers but have found numerous balls in this garden and even down in the estuary mud. They( previous owner and his sons ) must have hit practise ones all over the place and lost them. 2 doors down is a golfer and he hits along the flat down by the estuary. Last week I found one halfway up our track so not all his hits go where he expects.
Good luck with the new quilt. I am finding it hard to settle to start a new project. I keep changing my mind, so better get that straight first.
Hope you are all staying safe especially son in his job. I too am so missing Grandsons.

  2. I can so imagine Poirot living in one of the art deco apartments. Yes, burglars would think the pickings might be good at the fancy homes, but might also think they are likely to have burglar alarms, etc. Not that burglars are very smart though. That looks like a fun walk you had.

  3. What an interesting post! You cover a lot of ground (literally). 8-) Poirot is one of the guys getting me through this time of uncertainty... my husband was kind enough to give me the entire series on DVD a few years ago, so I can delve into the world of mystery and twinkly brown eyes whenever I like. It's such a comfort!

  4. Those flats made me think of Poirot before you mentioned him. I do like the old building and thinking of you and your classmates spending time there. Do you ever watch videos of quilt making on YouTube? The Missouri Star ones are very soothing to me.

  5. I'm loving your walks Pam. I was thinking of taking pictures of the walks that TheSecondChild and I have been taking (just for you) but they're so boring. Houses and streets mostly. And certainly no elevation to sneak a beautiful view. Speaking of walks -- I take it my long walk suggestion didn't seem appealing to you LOL? I'm going to have to fine SOMEbodies to go with me! It's something to dream of anyway. I love that you're planning the next quilt. You quilt like I do -- figure it out for yourself -- it's the way I was taught too, and to me, the planning and figuring is part of the fun. Can't wait to see it develop! XO
